Let the research begin!

Alright! Now that me and Mariana developed an outline for our plot, we can start researching our genre to try and establish some conventions that we can utilize.

For our genre, we ultimately decided on a drama film. Originally, I thought researching this would be very easy, but drama is such a broad category than many films use to describe their genre while they have a few sub-genres too. I'm going to be researching the overall genre, and I'll do my best to find films that mainly exhibit this genre, too, so I don't confuse me and Mariana's research and film outline.

First of all, I'd like to actually get a clear definition of what makes a film considered a drama. In my eyes, a drama should be a story with realistic characters that examines/displays issues that could happen in real life. An example of a film like this would be Good Will Hunting or Dead Poets Society. While those films may have more than one genre, or some sub-genres, they both clearly display what my definition of a drama film is.

All dramas have one thing in common; they focus on serious issues more than humor. This is actually a very old concept. The masks used in theatre "comedy and tragedy" represent the two genres live theatre used to display, either a comedic play, or a tragedy, now known as a drama.

So, using that little piece of history, me and Mariana will aim to showcase one of the most basic conventions of a drama film, showcasing a serious 'tragic' event. This actually perfectly aligns with our film idea, so we can continue on to deep diving into films that may exhibit similar concepts to get a good idea of what we can do with our short film.

Still researching...but now I'm finished!

I know, you're definitely sick of all of this genre research too, but it is genuinely very helpful in getting me to figure out what to ...
